We Are Families Helping Families

Volunteering provides a wonderful opportunity for people to meet, contribute and support a common cause. Volunteers are vital to us at the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society.

You help us to achieve our purpose by offering your time, skills and valuable advice. In whatever way you volunteer, the time you give goes towards supporting the children and their families that use our services. As a SCCS volunteer, you will receive on-going support and training throughout your involvement.

Are there minimum/maximum numbers of hours that I must commit to as a volunteer?

The time commitment depends on the type of volunteering you have agreed to. Once a volunteer has confirmed with a staff member on the date and time of volunteering, we do ask that no changes be made, with the exception of emergencies. Confirmation of volunteering and also any changes should be notified to the staff in charge, a minimum of 24 hours before the actual volunteering work.

How many events can I volunteer for?

You can volunteer for as many events and activities as you have time for! Please see our volunteering schedule here

I work full-time, can I still volunteer?

Yes, of course! After you fill in the Volunteer Form, we’ll work with you to see what activities would be the most suitable according to your interests and schedule. We do have ad hoc weekend volunteering slots available as well.

Will I be the only volunteer on duty or do I work as part of a team?

Depending on the task, you will be assigned to work individually or in teams. Nonetheless, each volunteer will be assigned a supervisor who would be more than happy to guide you along.

How do I keep track of my volunteer hours?

We’ll provide you with a Volunteer Log form that you can fill in after your session. Volunteers who provide 10 hours or more of volunteering each year will be emailed an e-Certificate of Volunteering (in January the following year). Should you need a hard copy, we can also provide it upon request. E-certificates can also be issued upon request.

What’s the dress code for volunteers?

Please dress decently when you are volunteering – as a volunteer, you are representing the Society! Dress comfortably and neatly with consideration towards the sensitivities of other people. Sleeveless and shorts are not allowed. We recommend t-shirt, long pants/jeans and comfortable, covered shoes. Please bring a jacket in case the air-conditioning is too cold for you.

For special public events, if necessary, we will provide you with the event-specific t-shirt.

What should I bring?

Do bring a water bottle, and a jacket in case you get cold. You can also bring your mobile phone charger if needed.

For events, we’ll prepare an operating manual for you to conduct the roadshow, and also brief you if it is your first time. These will help you communicate knowledgeably about SCCS, its work, and the event to those who may be interested.

How would I know my allocated time/day of volunteering?

You’ll be informed of the methods to sign up for volunteering, once we have received your application form, and contacted you. Depending on the location of the volunteering (hospital ward, centre, or public events), you will mutually agree with the SCCS staff in charge of your time and date of volunteering before confirmation. Please be realistic about the time you can commit for volunteering, and do be responsible and punctual for your volunteer duty.

What if I am sick or unable to report for duty as scheduled?

Please call your supervisor to notify him/her. If possible, please give your notification 2 days in advance. If you are slotted for more than one session, please re-confirm with your supervisor your availability for subsequent sessions.

Who do I talk to if I have a concern or need to adjust my schedule?

We will refer you to the staff in charge of the volunteer work you have applied for. Schedule adjustments should be notified at least 12 hours in advance.

Who do I meet when I arrive for duty?

We’ll provide you with the contact person’s name and number (SCCS staff or senior volunteer) in advance.
