Dear SCCS Family,
As we reflect on 2024, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for what we have achieved together. This year has been a journey of compassion, resilience, and unwavering support, made possible by the incredible efforts of our donors, volunteers, supporters, medical professionals, and the dedicated SCCS committee members and staff.
In February, during International Childhood Cancer Day, in conjunction with the theme “Unveiling Challenges” as highlighted by Childhood Cancer International (CCI), we focused on the significant logistical hurdles faced by Sarawakian families in accessing cancer treatment for their children. By collecting real-life stories from the families in our care, the goal was to shed light on lesser-known challenges of rural or suburban patients in Sarawak on their road to recovery.
Furthermore, this year’s GoBald 2024 campaign deserves special recognition. Through satellite shaves in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri, to the enthusiastic participation of individuals across the state, we were able to raise vital funds and awareness for children battling cancer. Every shaven head symbolised solidarity with our children, and the public’s outpouring of support reminded us of the strength of our community. To every participant, donor, and supporter—thank you for helping us make a lasting impact.
September, being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, brought the community together in meaningful ways. Youth Camp 2024 brought together over 60 participants, including 34 cancer survivors from across Sarawak as well as YASKA Brunei. The Samuel Beats Cancer Balloon Maze, held in Sibu for the first time, attracted over 8,000 visitors and served as a celebration of resilience as well as a platform for education and inspiration. The overwhelming response reflected the community’s shared determination to support families in need.
As president, I’ve had the privilege of attending various activities throughout the year, from outstation clinic days to awareness campaigns to celebrations, where I was deeply moved by the strength and courage of the families we serve. Most notably, this year marked the heartfelt return of an event deeply significant to me—our first Memorial Day since 2019. It was a profoundly moving moment to gather with families and friends, honouring the children we have lost and celebrating their enduring legacy. It reminded us of the importance of connection and the strength found in the community as we continue to walk this journey together. These moments remind me of why SCCS exists—to walk alongside these families, offering not just support but also hope and love.
To our generous donors and partners, thank you for standing with us. Whether through cash donations, in-kind contributions, or organising fundraisers, your support has been the backbone of our programs. You’ve enabled us to provide transportation, accommodation, emotional support, and so much more to families who need it most.
To our incredible volunteers, your time and energy have touched countless lives. And to the medical professionals, whose tireless work brings hope and healing, you are the heroes who make our mission possible. Your dedication inspires us every day.
As we step into 2025, let us carry forward the momentum of 2024. Childhood cancer is a battle no family should face alone. Together, we can continue to provide the resources, care, and support needed to ease this journey.
On behalf of the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, thank you for being part of our mission. I wish you and your loved ones a joyous and meaningful new year. Let us move forward together with hope, purpose, and unwavering determination.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Mary Kiu
