“On the scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest score, how brave and well do you think your mother or your son has fought?”
During his last day at SCCS halfway home, our support services team carried out a parent-child bonding activity with Zhi Ming and his mother to help them reflect on their journey while creating opportunities for appreciation. Zhi Ming and his mother both scored each other 10 points when our team asked them the question above.
Zhi Ming is a 12-year-old boy from Sarikei who was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a rare type of blood cancer. In August 2022, Zhi Ming and his mother checked into our halfway home in Kuching as they were undergoing chemotherapy at the Sarawak General Hospital.
We remember meeting Zhi Ming for the first time – he looked so tough on the outside, but we knew on the inside, he is a sweetheart. Over time, we had the opportunity to know more about Zhi Ming’s mother, whom we realised is a strong woman who cares deeply for her son and is willing to do whatever it takes to help him get better.
With Zhi Ming’s mother being the sole breadwinner of the family, SCCS also helped to reduce their financial burden by providing monthly financial aid. Last month (in December 2022), we said our farewell to Zhi Ming who completed his treatment and was granted permission to go home.
Despite his quiet personality, we were able to witness Zhi Ming’s strong composure, clarity and determination in fighting this battle that often comes with stressful, frustrating situations. He has taught us to find calm in the chaos and that is a lesson that we should all remember.
Sending our love to Zhi Ming and his mother in Sarikei!
