Nur Faiza and her mother first arrived at SCCS Kuching halfway home in July 2022, two months after she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A 8-year-old fighter from Baram, Faiza was quiet, shy and did not really want to talk when we first met her.
As weeks went by, Faiza slowly opened up to us and we saw the dynamic, expressive and somewhat cheeky girl that she is. Faiza is very creative and has a knack for mixing colours in her drawings and paintings. Eventually, we realised that she is very sociable and enjoys hanging out and playing with other kids.
With Faiza’s father being the sole breadwinner of the family, SCCS helped to reduce their financial burden by providing monthly financial aid. Having no place to stay in Kuching, Faiza and her mother found shelter at our halfway home throughout her treatment period. Food and transportation to and fro the hospital were also provided. At the early stage, we sponsored Faiza’s PET scan to accurately determine her diagnosis.
Last month in December 2022, we said our goodbyes to Faiza who had finally completed her intensive treatment and was granted permission to go home to Baram during her birthday week. We celebrated the good news over a mini farewell/birthday party. We could not be happier to see her birthday wish come true.
If there is one thing Faiza has taught us, it is to take it one step at a time. Faiza may not be fully aware of her diagnosis and condition, but she took her treatment and everything that came her way, one baby step at a time. We are so proud of how brave she has fought this battle!
