We Are Families Helping Families

Sharing by Jovelyn’s mother

“My daughter, Jovelyn, loves all things pink and unicorn. Just like most kids, she likes to eat anything fried – fried chicken, fried noodles and fried eggs.  Watching TikTok and YouTube videos is one of her favourite pastime activities.”

“When the doctor told us about Jovelyn’s diagnosis, we could not believe it. We were shocked and upset that Jovelyn had to fight cancer at the young age of 4. We did not know what to do.”

Few weeks prior to her official diagnosis, Jovelyn was having intermittent fever and her complexion was pale. She had no appetite to eat, causing her to lose weight.

These signs and symptoms triggered Jovelyn’s parents to bring her to a nearby clinic for a check-up. When Jovelyn did not show signs of recovery, they visited the Sarawak General Hospital for a more detailed medical check-up.

In December 2021, Jovelyn was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (B-ALL), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer.

“My daughter’s treatment, including chemotherapy, was challenging. As her parents, we have to face any uncertainties and undesirable news with courage. It is important for us to constantly motivate and encourage our only daughter, so that she can safely complete her treatment.”

Jovelyn’s mother shared that what kept her going was meeting other parents and caregivers at the ward who are fighting a similar battle.

“We were able to comfort each other by exchanging family stories and greetings. I never knew how powerful and reassuring a simple question like ‘Are you okay?’ could be.”

“The doctors and nurses at the Paediatric Oncology Ward 2A have been very kind and patient towards caring for Jovelyn. They always gave us words of encouragement, urging us to never stop fighting.”

“Besides that, SCCS has been really supportive in helping our family financially and emotionally. Jovelyn and the other kids at the ward love spending time with the passionate SCCS staff. They always organise fun activities to cheer up the kids.”

When asked about her advice to parents who are fighting this battle alongside their children, Jovelyn’s mother encourages them to be strong always and never give up fighting.

“Be patient with your child as they are going through a difficult time. You need to accept the situation and move forward with treatment. Pray that all will be well, and good health will be granted.”

In October 2022, Jovelyn completed her intensive chemotherapy. She now continues her follow-up care fortnightly at the Paediatric Specialist Clinic in Kozi Square.
