We Are Families Helping Families

2nd August 2018

LUNDU: Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) held their fifth Youth Camp at Union Yes Retreat, Lundu that ran from 21st to 23rd of July 2018. The camp is aimed at empowering childhood cancer survivors. SCCS is a community serving non-profit society for the relief and care of Malaysian children suffering from cancer and their families.

This year’s SCCS Youth Camp 2018 was organised by the SCCS in collaboration with The Champions. This year’s theme – Take the Lead – focused on inspiring survivors to play an active role in becoming the leaders in their lives and to encourage them to face their fears.

The Youth Camp is organised every year for childhood cancer survivors aged 14 to 24. Themes such as ‘Dare to Dream’, ‘Believe’ and ‘Keep Moving Forward’ from previous years, underlines the camp’s aim at building confidence, boosting morale and finding fulfilment in the cancer survivors’ lives. This year’s camp embraced learning outside of our usual educational environments with games and activities in hopes of motivating the survivors to learn that every day that they are alive, they are already a miracle.

One of SCCS’s priorities during this camp is to involve medical staff who work closely with childhood cancer patients from day to day, in the camp with the survivors. This is done with the hopes that the medical staff will be reaffirmed in their purpose, as they face the daily emotional challenges of working with childhood

cancer patients. In this year’s camp, 9 doctors and nurses were also in active participation during the talks and activities, to strengthen their relationships with the survivors.

“Youth Camp has been a great experience, the games and activities are fun and I would love to come again the year after!” said Maneesha, a Youth Camp 2018 participant. The talks and sessions were conducted with Ivan Evetovics, a passionate trainer and speaker, where he highlighted and embraced the triumphs and struggles of the survivors, to help them combat their fears and use their experiences as resources in taking the lead and making the most with their lives.
