We Are Families Helping Families

Jordy was only 2 years old when the doctor said that he has cancer.

Meet Jordy Muli, a cheeky 2-year-old, turning three, from the Sarikei town. In his free time, Jordy enjoys coloring. His favourite foods are fried chicken, apples and oranges.

One month before Jordy Muli was officially diagnosed with cancer, he started having bruises over his body, enlarged spleen and liver, loss of appetite and a high fever. Jordy’s mother also noticed swollen lymph nodes on his neck and under his arms. He was getting paler skin as time went on and his mother decided to bring him to the Sarikei Hospital for a check-up.

In April 2022, the doctor diagnosed Jordy with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer. Acute leukaemia can progress quickly, and if not treated properly, can be fatal within a few months.

Jordy and his mother had to move from Sarikei to Kuching for Jordy’s immediate treatment at the Paediatric Oncology ward in the Sarawak General Hospital.

“Being away from family during this challenging time is tough. Our family is unable to be here physically to show their support. We spend most of our time in the hospital, so it can get lonely at times with the absence of social activities,” said Jordy’s mother.

“Above all that, the most difficult part for me is watching Jordy suffer in pain from treatment side-effects like fever and bleeding, when there is nothing I can do to stop it.”

Jordy is now undergoing an intensive treatment which is estimated to last for six months, hoping to achieve remission. Remission means that the signs and symptoms of a cancer are reduced. Remission can be partial or complete. In a complete remission, all signs and symptoms of cancer have disappeared.

“The doctors told us that Jordy’s survival rate is as high as 85%. Knowing that gives us the courage to keep going and continue fighting.”

“During these uncertain times, SCCS has been very supportive in helping me care for Jordy. They provide us with daily allowance for food and other essential expenses at the hospital. Whenever Jordy is not going through active treatment in the hospital, SCCS will provide us with free accommodation at its Kuching halfway home.”

“After a rain, comes a rainbow. After a storm, there is always calm. To all the parents who are going through a similar journey, stay strong and keep fighting the odds.”
