Meet Benedict!
  1. How did you find out your child had cancer? what were your feelings?
One day my husband talked to my son and he saw Benedict got a bruised at his leg and arm. At the same times he was easy to get tired. He used to have sore throat and running nose. So my husband advised me to send him for medical surveillance. After two days doctor called me that he lost of blood(the result from the blood test). When I heard about that I was feeling down. I didn’t know what to do and I brought him to GH in Miri. He was there for three days and he was transferred to Kuching Hospital. I had not enough sleep because always thinking about him. He was not with me. He was sent and my mother accompanied him to Kuching. Just imagine , as a small boy traveled without his parents. It wasn’t easy for me. I had faith that every sickness would have a way to cure it. I never gave up and kept praying to my God Jesus Christ. After that I started to stay focus, being positive a mother and needed to strong so that he would not feel that he was sick. As a mother if I did not stay focus it could lead me feeling weak and hopeless. There was no reason for me to be down because it could not help me and my son. Based on my experience, the more I closer to God the more I felt strong because I believe that not only me faced the same problem and I was very sure other mothers even worst then me. I believed miracles would happen if I trusted the lord. True enough miracle happened and my son is getting better now.
  1. What was the most difficult moment for you and for your child?
One of the most difficult moment for me and my son was, we separated from each other for two months. I could not be with him in Kuching hospital because I had to be in Miri due to my daughters were still in school. My husband wasn’t around. He was still in Ghana. on February 2020 my husband and I were able to travel to Kuching and met my son. Another difficult moment I went through was always thinking about the sickness and how to cure it. My husband did not go to work again during that time due to covid situation. Try to imagine , he had not gone to work and we needed to do a treatment for my son. All it was about money. I was so disturbed when my son needed to be sent to Kuala Lumpur. In my mind was where did I get the money for the treatment and for buying air ticket. I was informed by the doctor his sickness was very rare in our country that made me worry too much. After discussed with one of the specialist, my son needed a new bone marrow. He had to go through bone marrow transplant. So all my kids went through the blood test to ensure that who was matched to my son. Before he did the transplant, he needed cpl(chest tube) CPL was used to do the blood transfusion, platelets and medicines. one of the most difficult moment also when Benedict went through 11 chemotherapy. It was a bad time for me and my son. My son was almost gave up because he felt very painful and he lost his hair . He vomited a lot and at one point he told me he was in pain. At that time only God knew how my feeling was. I cried a lot but not in front of him. I had to hide myself so that he could not see that I was crying . thank God I managed went through this situation. It was God helped us that the treatment went well in Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
  1. What inspired you most and helped you to keep going overcome the challenges.
My family, friends and church member inspired me to stay strong. I had to trust the doctor who treated
my son and listened to them what was the best way to heal my son. The SCCS staff also encouraged me
to stay focus and don’t ever gave up. As a mother, I had to have a positive mind so that my son also had
    a positive mind.
  2. What was the roles of SCCS during your journey?
They arranged the driver for me and my son from the airport to the hospital. He was so kind and helped
me to do the registration at the hospital. SCCS gave me pocket money while I was there for about three
months. They also helped me to pay the bill for blood test (which was taken outside the hospital) SCCS
helped me to pay all my transportation from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur (returned ticket). They also helped
me to pay my air ticket from Kuching back to Miri.
  3. What advice do you have for someone going through a similar challenge?
My advise to all who has the similar situation is to trust God and doctors. There is nothing impossible if
we have faith in God and our doctors and nurses. Keep praying and focus to God, He knows what to do.
Do not lose hope because miracle can happen anytime.
