Persatuan Fatt Lung Tang Kuching returns to help kids fight cancer by once again hosting a Satellite Shave for this year’s Go Bald, an event to raise awareness of childhood cancer and also funds for the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society. This is Persatuan Fatt Lung Tang Kuching’s second satellite shave since joining the event last year. A total of ___ association members from went bald, and total donations raised was RM_______. This satellite shave would not have been possible without the help and support of Persatuan Fatt Lung Tang Kuching, who have so generously given time, effort and finances in order to help raise funds for Go Bald 2019.
Childhood cancer is now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in developed and developing countries. In some countries, deaths due to childhood cancer are more than the combined deaths from all types of childhood illnesses. In Sarawak, a child is diagnosed with cancer every 5 days.
However, childhood cancer is considered a “modern day miracle” due to the significant increase in survival rates especially in developed, high income countries. With awareness and support, SCCS aims to increase access to care for children with cancer.
First launched in 2009, Go Bald is the main awareness and fundraising event for the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS). The act of going bald shows solidarity to children with cancer that they are not alone in this journey, and that hair loss is only a temporary setback on the journey to recovery. In addition, Go Bald helps the society to raise funds to subsidize its annual operational cost of approximately RM1.5million.
Since its formation in 1999, SCCS has supported more than 1,200 children and their families through various services provided. Their services range from emotional support, the running of halfway homes in Kuching and Miri for outstation patients receiving treatment at local government hospitals, financial aids, training for medical staff, public education campaigns and various recreational activities throughout the year. With an average of 70 children diagnosed with cancer each year, not to mention the number of relapse cases, much resources and energy is invested to ensure sustainable support towards the care of children suffering from cancer, and their families.
Go Bald 2019 main event in Kuching will be held on 26 May 2019. Those wishing to participate in the main event can register at Vivacity Megamall information counter, which is open daily from 10AM to 10PM. Other organizations from any parts of Sarawak are also encouraged to hold a satellite shave at their own premises as a part of their CSR project.
