Sharing by Adrina’s mother.

Adrina was only 13 years old when she was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). AML is a type of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow and usually develops in cells that turn into white blood cells.

“I brought her to KPJ Miri Specialist Hospital to do a blood test because I saw that she was feeling very weak. She was also experiencing hair loss and her complexion was very pale.”

“When her blood test results came back, it was stated that she had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and I was advised to bring Adrina to the hospital immediately.”

Adrina had to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, so her mother accompanied her in moving from Miri to Kuching so that she could get the necessary medical treatment and care.

“The most difficult part for me was seeing Adrina in pain but knowing that there is nothing I can do to help lessen her pain. Every time after she finishes her chemotherapy session, Adrina will experience fever, diarrhea and vomit. She will have no appetite to eat at all and feel very weak. As a mother, it breaks my heart to see my child go through such a tough time.”

In November 2021, Adrina completed her treatment and finally went back to her hometown Miri with her mother.

“I am so thankful to SCCS and their staff for helping us get through this tough time. During Adrina’s treatment in Kuching, they provided us accommodation and transportation to and fro the hospital. Sometimes, we would have fun activities at the halfway home and it gave Adrina and I some sense of normalcy in the midst of chaos. Cikgu Kai Syn was also very caring and gave me emotional support.”

“In February this year, Adrina celebrated her 14th birthday. My daughter was so happy because SCCS delivered a surprise gift right to our doorstep.”

“To all the parents out there going through this journey, remember to stay strong for our children. Do not give up because we are the pillars for our kids. Always be there for them every step of the journey.”
