SCCS Team attends the 30th Childhood Cancer International (CCI) Conference

 Childhood Cancer International ( ) , ! ️

This year’s global gathering of childhood cancer organisations focused heavily on closing the inequality gap in access to cancer treatments. Insightful discussions explored how countries can better collaborate, mentor, and support one another, particularly those with limited resources.

A particularly heartwarming initiative that caught our attention was the Rainbow Bear by the Rainbow Foundation Beijing. Created by a parent of a child with cancer, this adorable teddy bear acts as a comforting tool to gently introduce children to the concept of cancer. We are excited to share that discussions have already begun on how we can bring this wonderful initiative to support our young fighters here in Malaysia.

Before the main event, participants engaged in an educational day with hands-on workshops, including sessions on fundraising and elevator pitch exercises. A particularly moving session on grief featured a father’s story about losing his daughter. It also addressed how survivor’s guilt affects not only survivors but also those around them, along with the emotional toll of time lost and physical loss due to cancer.

We also gained valuable insights into programs aimed at easing the implementation of our planned Back to School program for educators, as well as developing medical fact sheets and treatment roadmaps to give caregivers a clearer understanding of the medications used during treatment.

The SCCS team, led by President Mary Kiu, Past-President of SCCS and current CCI President Rodney Wong, and Executive Director Jodie Sim, proudly represented Sarawak while celebrating CCI’s 30th anniversary, wearing our traditional clothing and sharing our hometown heritage.

This conference was a powerful reminder of how organisations worldwide can unite to share knowledge and find new ways to support children and families affected by cancer.
