The Sarawak Children\u2019s Cancer Society (SCCS) proudly launched the first leg of its GoBald 2025 main shave events on Sunday, 15 June, at The Imperial City Mall in Miri. As Sarawak\u2019s largest and only head-shaving fundraiser, the event marked an inspiring start\u2014raising RM77157.26 in funds and seeing 38 brave participants shave their heads in solidarity with children battling cancer.

\u201cThe theme for GoBald this year is \u201cLeave Your Mark\u201d, an invitation for everyone to be part of something bigger. GoBald is more than just a fundraiser\u2014it\u2019s a movement of hope, courage, and community. Every shaved head sends a powerful message: our children do not walk this journey alone,\u201d said SCCS President, Mary Kiu Ai Ling (\u90b1\u7231\u73b2).

\u201cWe are deeply grateful to every participant, donor, and partner who continues to support our mission to improve the lives of children with cancer and their families.\u201d

Since its launch in March, GoBald 2025 has seen a steady rise in registrations. To date, around 150 participants from across Malaysia have joined the campaign, raising over RM390,000 from more than 1,200 donors.

In 2024, GoBald raised over RM781,000 with more than 290 participants shaving their heads. This year, SCCS is aiming higher\u2014with a fundraising target of RM1 million and a goal of recruiting at least 400 shaves. The Society\u2019s annual operating cost exceeds RM2 million, with over 70% of funds directly supporting medical and financial aid, accommodation, emotional care, and other essential services. In 2024 alone, SCCS recorded RM2.9 million in total expenses, with a notable rise in medical sponsorships exceeding RM500,000.

Among the first to step on stage was Samuel Liau (\u5ed6\u4ee5\u8bda), a 7-year-old boy from Miri who was diagnosed with high-risk Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2021. Samuel underwent 8 cycles of chemotherapy, a resection surgery, stem cell transplant, and immunotherapy treatment that cost up to RM412,000, of which RM260,000 was covered by SCCS.

\u201cI want to help kids to be strong, healthy and happy again,\u201d shared Samuel, who has now returned to school and continues to inspire others with his courage.

Also joining Samuel on stage were Konny Koh (\u8bb8\u5609\u6587), representative of venue sponsor The Imperial Mall, and Michael Lim (\u6797\u9526\u53d1), a long-time volunteer with SCCS. Shaving alongside them were Dominic Anak Jujut and Joseph Anak Bakam, the father and grandfather of Gwen, a young girl diagnosed with cancer who is currently in remission. Both men took the brave step to shave in solidarity with families impacted by childhood cancer.

About Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS)<\/strong>
Mission:<\/strong> To provide care and support for Malaysian children and their families who are suffering from childhood cancer in Sarawak.

The Sarawak Children\u2019s Cancer Society is a non-profit organisation founded in November 2001, dedicated to meeting the needs of families of patients diagnosed with paediatric cancer in Sarawak irrespective of race, religion, age or gender. The SCCS committee is made up of 70% patients\u2019 parents and 30% volunteers. The Society has supported more than 1,700 children since 2001.

Our Services<\/strong>
Support<\/strong>
Through counselling sessions, home visits, support programmes, youth and family camps, and informal friendships, SCCS provides emotional and moral support to members of its community. In 2024, SCCS provided more than 700 caring sessions and 36 counselling sessions to patients and families.<\/strong>

Accommodation<\/strong>
SCCS operates a 14-bedroom Children’s Cancer Centre (CCC) as a temporary living house for outstation patients, with full provision of food and amenities. Daily shuttle services are provided to and from the hospital. The home housed 40 families<\/strong> in 2024.\u00a0

Financial Assistance<\/strong>
Caring for a child with cancer is beyond the means of most of the patients we serve. To families demonstrating financial need, SCCS provides monetary assistance through monthly financial subsidies, medical treatment not covered by the government and transport subsidies. 46 families received financial aid in 2024, amounting to a total of RM109,500.00 while monthly transport subsidies were provided to a total amount of RM56,632.76 for 49 families.<\/strong> SCCS provided RM762,786 in medical sponsorships for procedures, drugs, consumables, lab tests, and prostheses for 48 patients.<\/strong>

Education<\/strong>
SCCS holds talks and campaigns to educate the public about cancer and the stigmas often attached to it. Educational and craft activities are also organised for the children to keep their minds off the treatment. SCCS also supports funding for medical staff training to allow them to provide better care for the patients. 21 medical staff received training supported by SCCS and saw over 8,000 attendees at their annual childhood cancer awareness event in 2024.<\/strong>

Recreation<\/strong>
SCCS organises outings, holiday camps, children’s parties and other activities for children and their families to heighten the spirit of the families. For children with cancer, each birthday is a victory. SCCS held birthday celebrations for 106 children in 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
