KUCHING
30 SEPTEMBER 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) in September, Sarawak Children\u2019s Cancer Society (SCCS) is organising a Gold Ribbon Sculpture Competition for Kuching secondary school students at the Vivacity Megamall on Sunday, 2 October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of seven shortlisted sculptures created using only recycled materials will be exhibited at the mall\u2019s Ground Floor in the East Atrium. Participating schools include SMK Green Road, SMK Batu Lintang, SMK Seri Setia, Chung Hua Middle School No.1, Chung Hua Middle School No.3 and Batu Kawa Min Lit Secondary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winning teams will be announced at the prize-giving ceremony and receive attractive cash vouchers worth a total of RM7,200. The prizes are sponsored by PC Image, Siong How Electrical & Electronic, Kok Siong Electrical and SAMSUNG, with Vivacity sponsoring the event venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be attending as the Guest of Honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition will round off the non-profit organisation\u2019s month-long CCAM activities held to heighten awareness of childhood cancer amongst its local community while raising support to progress greater access of proper care for children diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery year in September during CCAM, SCCS will join childhood cancer organisations worldwide in leading awareness programmes and activities for our local community. Our aim is to raise awareness of the issues that Sarawak childhood cancer patients, families and survivors face, through informative materials and engaging activities that members of the public can participate in,\u201d said SCCS President Rodney Wong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe inter-school Sculpture competition is a fun means to spark conversations around childhood cancer amongst students, teachers and even parents while educating them that the gold ribbon and the colour gold are international awareness symbols of childhood cancer. Incorporating recycled items as part of the competition\u2019s requirement will also help to encourage students to be more environmentally conscious,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition is divided into two categories of Lower Secondary (Form 1 to 3) and Upper Secondary (Form 4 to 5). Each school is allowed to send only one representing team for each category, with a maximum of five students per team. The competition is open to only secondary schools in the Kuching area as part of safety measures due to the sculpture size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortlisted teams will be evaluated on sculpture idea and concept; understanding and application of materials; skills and technique; creativity and originality; as well as project execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wong added, \u201cIn addition to the Sculpture competition and exhibition, other activities at our booth include kids colouring, face and hand painting, balloon twisting workshop by De Jackie Inspirations, fun craft workshop by Kinderplay and SCCS merchandise sale. These activities will run for the whole of Sunday, from 10am to 9pm, so join us and bring along your kids and family. It will be a fun way to learn more about childhood cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its efforts in building up the public\u2019s understanding of childhood cancer, SCCS continues to share real stories of children diagnosed with cancer, signs and symptoms, as well as myths and facts on its Facebook and Instagram pages @sccsmy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Society also recently initiated a CCAM celebration at the Sarawak General Hospital to encourage children, appreciate parents while recognising medical frontliners in the fight against childhood cancer. A total of 90 golden goodie bags were distributed to children, parents, caregivers and the paediatric medical team. Other activities held to raise childhood cancer awareness include a social media Pokok Challenge calling for all to do a tree pose with the gold ribbon hand sign, standing tall and strong like a tree for children fighting cancer.
